Lauren’s Cake Smash

Home>Baby Photo Sessions>Lauren’s Cake Smash

Remember when I said that Lauren was a different kind of Beekmann baby? Remember when I went on and on about how she was too busy grading everybody to headbutt them?

Well, never mind. I take it back. All of it.

And I’m very glad I’m not a cake.

Let me tell you how cake smashes usually go: We sit our birthday girl or boy in front of a small cake. Then we do a lot of prodding. We get the baby to focus on the cake. We lightly move the baby’s hand towards the cake. Some babies don’t like the way frosting feels. Some babies don’t like the idea of touching something they’ve never seen before. But once they realize that it’s okay to go ham on that sweet dessert and that it actually tastes good, they love it. Cake smash photography takes a lot patience, but, thankfully, I’ve got tons of that.

But I didn’t need any of it with Lauren. From the moment we sat that cake down, she was all in. One hand. Two hands. In her mouth. All over her cheeks. Lauren did not care.

R.I.P., cake. You were way too delicious to live.

Then Lily and Logan got involved.

I shot Lily’s cake smash almost five years ago, but I still remember how worried Krista was about letting Lily eat sugar. I promised her that Lily would be fine, that she’d be like most babies who ended up doing more smashing than consuming. I mean, porcelain dolls don’t eat much.

Aaaaaand I was wrong. Just like her sister would almost five years later, itty bitty Lily dove right in. Cake was everywhere. It was a smashing success1! And once she went frosting, she never went back2.

I’m starting to think it’s the cute ones I should be worried about.

Logan was a different story. I totally expected him to be just as into it as his sister, but he was one of those kids who needed a whole lot of prodding, time, and, eventually, a spoon. But he was crazy cute, so I forgave him.

And they still haven’t changed. Lily was more than happy to help her sister get at that frosting, while Logan did more smiling than anything else. But at the end of the day, they both had a ton of fun celebrating their sister’s (almost) first birthday.

Lauren really enjoyed her cake smash and her brother and sister made her photo shoot even better. These little Beekmanns really are a triple threat.

1 Puns! #sorrynotsorry

2 Don’t worry. Five years later, Lily’s a healthy girl who’d rather drink water than soda.
